Finding the Perfect Fit: How to Calculate Aerial Silk Length

Choosing the right length for your aerial silks is crucial for both safety and functionality. At Aerials USA, we want to help you find the perfect silks for your practice space. Here’s a simple guide to calculating the ideal length:

1. Measure Your Ceiling Height:

Use a tape measure to determine the distance from the floor to the point where your silks will be rigged. It’s important to measure to the actual rigging point, not just the ceiling, as hardware can affect the overall length.

2. Double the Height:

Multiply your ceiling height by two. This accounts for the silks being folded in half to create the loop for aerial work.

3. Add Extra Length:

Add 1-2 yards to your doubled height to allow for:

  • Knotting: The knots used to secure the silks will take up some fabric.
  • Wrapping: Many aerial moves involve wrapping the silks around your body, which requires extra length.
  • Tail Length: Having some extra fabric hanging down at the bottom (the “tail”) can be useful for certain moves and transitions.

4. Round Up to the Nearest Even Number:

Aerial silks are typically sold in even-numbered lengths (e.g., 12 yards, 14 yards, 16 yards). Round your calculated length up to the nearest even number to ensure you have enough fabric.

Example:

If your ceiling height is 9 feet (3 yards):

  • Double the height: 3 yards x 2 = 6 yards
  • Add extra length: 6 yards + 2 yards = 8 yards
  • Round up to the nearest even number: 8 yards
