Measuring Your Ceiling for Aerial Hammocks: A Step-by-Step Guide

Want to hang an aerial yoga hammock at home but not sure if your ceiling is high enough? First, you need to determine what kind of hammock you’ll be using. There are two main types:

  • Single-point hammocks: These hang from a single point and are designed for spinning and dynamic movement. They require more ceiling height because they tend to swing further than double-point hammocks.
  • Double-point hammocks: These hang from two points and offer more stability, making them ideal for aerial yoga and static poses.

Once you know which type of hammock you’ll be using, follow these steps to measure your ceiling:

1. Determine Your Desired Hammock Height:

  • Consider your activities: If you’re primarily using the hammock for aerial yoga, a height around hip level is generally recommended for double-point hammocks. For single-point hammocks, you’ll likely want it a bit higher to allow for more clearance as you spin.
  • Factor in personal preference: Some people prefer their hammock a bit higher or lower, so consider your individual comfort and the types of movements you’ll be doing.

2. Measure from the Floor to the Rigging Point:

  • Locate your rigging point(s): Identify the sturdy beam or joist(s) where you’ll be hanging your hammock. This is the point where your hanging hardware will be attached.
  • Measure accurately: Use a tape measure to determine the exact distance from the floor to the rigging point(s).

3. Account for Hammock Drop:

  • Subtract hammock drop: Aerial hammocks have a “drop,” meaning they stretch and hang lower when you’re in them. Subtract the hammock’s drop from your ceiling height measurement. You can usually find the hammock’s drop specified on the product page or in the manufacturer’s instructions. If you’re unsure, estimate a drop of 3-4 feet for a double-point hammock and 5-6 feet for a single-point hammock to be safe.

4. Consider Minimum Clearance:

  • Ensure adequate clearance: After subtracting the hammock drop, you should have at least 9-10 feet of clearance between the bottom of the hammock and the floor. This allows for safe movement and prevents you from hitting the ground during inversions or poses.

Example:

If your ceiling height is 12 feet and you have a double-point hammock with a 3-foot drop:

  • 12 feet (ceiling height) – 3 feet (hammock drop) = 9 feet (clearance)

In this example, your ceiling is high enough for an aerial hammock.
