Creating Your Home Aerial Studio: Space Requirements for Silks and Lyra

Dreaming of practicing aerial arts in the comfort of your own home? At Aerials USA, we can help you create a safe and functional home aerial studio. Here’s a guide to the space requirements for aerial silks and aerial hoop (lyra):

Ceiling Height:

  • Ideal Height: A ceiling height of 12-15 feet is generally recommended for most aerial arts. This allows ample space for climbs, inversions, and drops without hitting the floor.
  • Minimum Height: For basic moves and shorter aerialists, a ceiling height of 10 feet might be sufficient, but it will limit the types of skills you can practice.
  • Consider Your Apparatus: The required ceiling height will also depend on the length of your aerial silks or the diameter of your aerial hoop.

Floor Space:

  • Clearance: Ensure you have enough clear floor space around your aerial point to move freely and safely. A minimum of 6 feet of clearance on all sides is recommended.
  • Crash Mats: Use appropriate crash mats to cushion falls and provide a safe landing surface. Factor in the size of your crash mats when determining floor space requirements.

Other Considerations:

  • Obstacles: Make sure there are no obstacles, such as furniture, light fixtures, or ceiling fans, that could interfere with your practice.
  • Doorways: If you plan to practice near a doorway, ensure there is enough clearance to avoid hitting the door when swinging or spinning.
  • Rigging: Consult a professional rigger to determine the best location for your aerial point and ensure it can safely support the weight of your equipment and your body.
